Principal Involvement

Principal involvement begins at the preliminary stage of each project and continues through final completion and system commissioning.

From early marketing stages to post-occupancy follow-ups, you can be assured that an actual owner of our firm is involved each step of the way.

Our principals select your system to yield a comfortable environment that fits within your project’s budget. They review staff engineer design calculations and documents at regular intervals to ensure the best possible quality control.

And during project construction, they’re actively involved with construction administration and system start-up, ensuring installation and operation within the designed guidelines.

Sustainable Design

We consistently provide long-term solutions that are environmentally and economically responsible.

Throughout its history, Hoss & Brown has always practiced sustainable design. Providing high quality, efficient systems design based on life-cycle cost analyses is a basic necessity in our industry.

With Energy Star, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), and other energy saving standards, we can better quantify whole-building solutions. Whether a building is to be designed to certification standards or not, there are many principles from these certifications that we regularly employ in our designs.

Some of these items include: energy efficient heating and cooling systems, low flow plumbing fixtures, high efficiency lighting fixtures controlled by occupancy sensors, safe refrigerants, recycled materials, carbon dioxide measurement, and enhanced ventilation effectiveness.

Quality Control

At Hoss & Brown, we believe quality control is essential to lowering your building costs.

To achieve this, we exchange plans with architects, structural, and civil engineers. This decreases guess work during the bidding process and ensures our clients receive a well-rounded set of plans. It also allows us to review the designs of other trades to determine and head off potential field conflicts.

The thorough quality control process we exercise over our engineering services in Kansas City helps us eliminate unwanted change orders and provide well-coordinated mechanical and electrical plans.

Engineered Value

To us, “engineered value” ensures our clients’ projects meet their intended use and budget and are sustainable for them in the long run.

There are a great deal of factors that dictate the direction of a project. By keeping track of previous projects and their associated costs, our engineers can easily determine what type of system will yield a high quality, comfortable environment while maintaining an affordable project scope.

Other major concerns in determining a system type are cost of operation and annual maintenance. After all, merely keeping a job within the project budget is futile if the owner cannot afford to maintain and operate the facility long-term due to inefficient or low-quality equipment.

Multiple Disciplines

At Hoss & Brown Engineers, all of our engineers are cross-trained in each of the disciplines that we work in: mechanical, plumbing and electrical. This helps our work to be better coordinated, and allows our clients to have a single point of contact on every project that can answer all their questions.

Wide Scope of Services

We offer engineering services in Kansas City and across the country. In fact, we’re licensed in 46 states and have worked throughout the world. With over 60 years in business, our firm has streamlined our process to provide clients with the very best solutions for their project.

Customer Satisfaction

Over 90% of the firm’s annual projects are for repeat clients. We feel this speaks to the quality of design, construction, administration, and engineering services provided by Hoss and Brown Engineers.

1951

In 1951, Don Hoss founded the firm of D.C. Hoss and Associates, Consulting Engineers. Ken Brown joined the company in the summer of 1959 and was a partner six years later. The name of the firm was then changed to D.C. Hoss and K.L. Brown Consulting Engineers.

1990

The firm is incorporated under the leadership of Ken Brown and Pete Laughlin and the name is changed to Hoss & Brown Engineers, Inc.

1998

In 1998, Hoss & Brown Engineers expanded into the Kansas City market by opening a satellite office in Lenexa. Shortly after, Kurt Ewert joined Hoss & Brown as a partner to help grow the Kansas City office.

2003

In 2003, the main office in Topeka was relocated to Lawrence, Kansas. This allowed us to help better serve our clients and to facilitate our continued growth in our engineering services in Kansas City.

2020

Having outgrown their offices, the Lenexa and Lawrence offices merged into a new headquarters building located in Shawnee, KS. Hoss & Brown is now operating with Neil Bartley as President and Casey Steiner and Matt Murrell as Vice Presidents.
